OUR MISSION
To be one person who is faithful to God by knowing Jesus Christ in a personal relationship, by coming together to worship God joyfully, and by living in daily obedience to God’s Word.
To bring one person to a personal relationship with Jesus by communicating the gospel in our neighborhoods and around the world, by meeting the needs of people lovingly, and by daily living a God-honoring life.
To build one person to maturity in Christ by teaching God’s Word, the Bible, by caring for one another as a community of Christian friends, by making disciples and disciple-makers, and by equipping Christians for ministry.
CORE VALUES
Preaching
2 Timothy 4:2. “Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.”
We aim to “Build One” person at a time to maturity in Christ, using expository preaching through the Bible.
Worship
Psalm 100: 1-3 “Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into His presence with singing!
Music unites our congregation in glorifying praise to God and prepares our hearts to receive His Word.
Prayer
James 5:16 “The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”
Our ministries and our people are supported in prayer as often as we gather together.
Discipleship
Acts 2:42 “And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.”
To “Be One” is to learn how to grow and mature as a follower of Jesus, through equipping classes, small groups, and Bible Study.
Evangelism
2 Corinthians 5:20 “…we are ambassadors for Christ, God making His appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.”
To “Bring One” to faith in Christ takes preparation, practice, support, and encouragement, as we aim to reach the community with the message of Jesus Christ.
Outreach
Matthew 28:19 “Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations…”
We support missionaries throughout the world in their efforts to evangelize, plant new churches, and strength the local church in areas of great gospel need.
DISCIPLESHIP PRACTICES
OUR STORY
Hillside Church began in 1953, and has been serving the San Jose, California, area for over 60 years. Starting in a fruit shed on Lincoln Avenue in the now affluent Willow Glen area, Hillside’s early beginnings brought 23 charter members together. After twenty-five years meeting at Newport Avenue in Willow Glen, land was purchased in 1977, and construction began on our current property at 545 Hillsdale Avenue. Our present Worship Center was completed in 1977.
Origins: From its founding 60 years ago until today, Hillside Church champions its vision to serve the community through bold, biblical preaching, and evangelism.
Leadership: Throughout its multi-decade history, Hillside Church has been led by just four pastors. In this recent era, the pastoral team consistently brings a reformed and evangelistic approach to on of the most secular areas in the United States.
Community Outreach: Hillside Church maintains an outward focus, offering family ministries, adult fellowships, community involvement, and annual events to reach out to the surrounding neighborhoods.
Growth: In 2022, City Light Bible Church was launched as a church plant in the Santa Clara area, with its mission to be a light to the unchurched in that community. Hillside also focuses on church revitalization within the neighboring communities.
